Sri Lanka Independence Day

Sri Lanka gained independence by liberating the country from British & Portuguese colonialists on the 4th of February 1948. The then leaders and people of Srilanka gave great sacrifices for their sovereign homeland. The independence movement began with Uva Wellassa riot in 1818. D.S. Senanayaka was the first Prime Minister of independent Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan nation was subject of terrorism and internal wars until 18th May 2009 when the peace was restored by the leadership of the 5th Executive President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa the nation was able to gain true independence. The peace has been restored the country. Acting on a firm stance in the face of many national and international elements Sri Lankan nation was able to achieve its greatest ever victories on the 18th of May 2009 by defeating terrorism.

Rehabilitation Commissioner General, Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe has told the government media unit that there are 4,500 former LTTE cadres in Protective Accommodation and Rehabilitation Centers (PARCs) under the Ministry of Rehabilitations and Prison Reforms and they are given training in masonry, carpentry and other life skills.

At the end of the war in May 2009, the government detained over 11,000 LTTE rebels suspected of committing acts against humanity and sent them to rehabilitation camps.

Following rehabilitation 5,586 LTTE cadres out of the 11,696 detained after the war have been integrated into the normal civilian life after giving them various types of vocational training and in some cases school education during their detention in rehabilitation centers
