Sri-Lanka Ancient Urinals & Lavatories
The ancient Buddhist monasteries appear to have paid much attention
to sanitation. The remains of urinals and lavatories were provided with
cesspits, underground clay pots, wash—stones with
foot steps and curtain-stones. The Tapovana monasteries in Anuradhapura provide
special samples elaborately carved with prasada designs. These stand in contrast
to the severe undeco-
rated meditation and living edifices of the monks. This contrasting feature is
thought to have been a deliberate attempt to show their contempt against
comfortable and sensory enjoyments of
the city-dwelling monks.
